8 History: Holy…Wars? – iBook Student Responses

cruPost your replies to the Critical Thinking Question from your iBook here. Remember to use al the resources in the iBook as well as your own research.  We will discuss your responses in our next class.

The three main sides in this were the Muslims of Jerusalem the Christians from Europe and the Jews of Jerusalem.

Research the three sides that fought in the crusades. You will need to find out about their history, motivations, actions and if you feel that one side was more just, or were they all at fault?

  • In your research think about and answer these questions:
  • Were the Crusades only fought in the name of religion?
  • Why is Jerusalem such an important city?
  • Why would people of Europe be so eager to fight in the Crusades (Adventure?)
  • Who had the rightful ‘claim’ to Jerusalem? (does anyone)?
  • Finally, make a timeline that covers the events mentioned in your research (We will do this one later)

This is another writing task that will require some deep thinking and research on your part.

  1. Jerusalem was a holy land. It was shared amongst the Muslims, Christians and Jews. The Muslims were the main land owners however in 1095 a new groups of Arabs took over Jerusalem and the Christians and Jews weren’t allowed in. So pope urban took over and ordered a crusade on Jerusalem. The knights went because they were promised to go to heaven if they died in battle. After 2 years of searching for Jerusalem they found it and after 2 months in siege and battle the Christians took over Jerusalem again. However after only 50 years later the Muslims conquered again. So the pope ordered another crusade. The wars went on and on and Jerusalem was in the hands of Muslims and Christians and Jews over many years.
I believe that the crusades were only fought in the name of religion. They had no other reason to fight. Jerusalem was an important city because it was the holy land. To the Christians it was were Jesus was crucified. To the Muslims it was a place the Muhammad was ascended to heaven. And to the Jews it was a site of an ancient temple.

  2. In the middle ages there were wars known as crusades. Crusades were wars fought based on religious beliefs and fought on holy lands like Jerusalem. Jerusalem was a very holy land and still is because it is the birth place of Jesus Christ. The first crusade was arranged in 1095 after a group of Muslims took over the holy land of Jerusalem. The pope at the time ordered all the knights of Europe to take back their land. 30,000 knights volunteered and left to go to war.

Many of the knights were eager to go, so they could finally use their skills and have a great battle to fight. The Muslims did not want to wage war or anything in that category, all they did was live in Jerusalem. The Christians did not want another religion to stay in the holy land. The Christians won the battle. I do not think that any religion has the right claim to the land, I think that anyone has the right to live where ever they want. After that crusade was over after two years of battle, they still kept fighting each other.

  3. I don’t think any of the three armies had a good enough reason to fight, because they all where fighting so there religion could take over. Witch is stupid because everyone has there different beliefs.

The battles where only fort at a holy place.

Jerusalem is important because it is a holy place.

Europe wanted everyone to follow there religion.

I don’t think all of them own Jerusalem because all there religion started in Jerusalem.

  4. -The crusade weren’t always fought in the name of religion sometimes they were also fought because of political and social issues.
-Jerusalem is such an important city because the son of god, Jesus was born there.
-The Europeans were so eager to fight in the crusades because the pope told them that is hey fought for Christianity they would be sent to heaven no matter what.
-I don’t believe anyone has he rightful claim to Jerusalem because it is the place of Jesus’ birth so dies that mean the Christians have a right to it? Or do the Jews have a right to it because it is said that Judaism made jerusalem a holy city over 3000 years ago and the Jews have remained steadfast to it. But why should the Islamic people have a claim over it because they really have no historical attachment to the city whatsoever ever why should they lay claim over it? I do not know really which religion really holds more historical value for this city so I can not say which religion deserves to lay a claim of more.

  5. The crusades:
the Christians in the first crusade had a new pope
named pope urban and he doesn’t like the Islamic people so he claims that all of their holy land is to be renamed Christian holy land. They do this because christians want everywhere to be christian holy land. How does he get people to fight for him by telling them if they fight for the holy land he will put them into heaven when they die. The Christians went over to Palestine the holy land and they take over the Muslims land. The Christians took over four city’s Jerusalem, Damascus, Antioch and Edessa in just four years. Jerusalem is such an important city because For the Christian nation it is very important because that is where Jesus died and rose again, and did most of his preaching. It is important to the Muslims because that is where Mohammad ascended. It is important to Jerusalem because that is there holy land, the land given to them by god. Hope this helped! The Muslims did have rightful claim to it because it is on their land but the Christians did take over Jerusalem. After that the Muslims did not like this and they fought back and took over the city of Edessa after that the pope comes up with a third crusade and the Christians get their buts kicked. So after after about floury years of thinking they come up with another crusade! Richard the lionheart the king of England comes along and he starts a war with Saladin and he is a Muslim leader and he has been building a huge empire over in the Middle East. So king Richard comes along with a load of Christians and I fight breaks out but it has nothing to do with the Muslims they where fighting among themselves but after that they give up and go back to England and then Saladin agrees to a piece treaty. But then another pope named pope innocent comes along and he comes up with a bald new a enunciative, a fourth crusade! That actives nothing.

  6. Q1 The crusades where fought in the name of religion because the Europeans where told that if they fought in the crusades that they will go to heaven because God will appreciate what they have done. When really it was just the pope who didn’t want the Muslims in the holy land.

Q2 Jerusalem is such an important city to many religions, to the Christians it was where Jesus was killed and ascended to heaven, for the Muslims it was where Muhammad ascended to heaven, and for the Jewish it was the site of an ancient temple build by Solomon.

Q3 People of Europe where so eager to fight because because the pope didn’t like the fact that the Muslims and Jewish where in “his” holy land, so using his power he had over the Europeans he got them to fight for him because he was easily able to manipulate them by telling them that if they fought for him they would go to heaven.

Q4 In my mind the people who had the rightful claims to the holy city of Jerusalem was if anyone the Jewish had the rightful claim to Jerusalem was the Jewish had been there the longest and they where the ones who had build the great city and they had the ancient temple that Solomon build for the Jews.

  7. The crusades
Yes, The crusades were only fought in the name of religion because they European Christians believed that Jerusalem was truly theirs because Jesus the son of god was born there.
Jerusalem is such an important city because for three religions it is the birth place of Jesus the son of god. Jerusalem is the holy land of many religions havering many religious land marks. Many religions go on pilgrims to Jerusalem.
The Europeans were so eggar to go on these crusades because they believed that they would go to heaven if they fought for god. Some also considered it an adventure because you are going to never before seen places. They also found never before seen foods as well.
The Muslims have the right to live in Jerusalem and call it theirs because they live there. But other religions can call it theirs because it has religious backgrounds.

  8. 1. No, the crusades didn’t only fought in the name of religion they fought in political and social issues.

    2. Jerusalem is an important city because its were Jesus was born. Also the Pope called the crusade to take over Jerusalem. 30000 men left Western Europe to fight in Jerusalem. Jesus wasn’t just born there but he died and rose from his grave. Jerusalem was seen as a holy land given from god.

    3. When the Muslims won Jerusalem the Pope ordered another crusade . They didn’t only want crusades because of religious issues but it was for personal gain. The pope basically bribed the knights. He said if they did it they would go straight to heaven.

    4. No one actually had Jerusalem. The Christians believed it was theirs because Jesus died and rose there but the Jews claimed it was there’s because Judaism claimed Jerusalem. But why would Islam want Jerusalem? They have no connection to this ‘holy land’.

  9. “Were the Crusades only fought in the name of religion?”

Yes. Muslims have always been at Jerusalem. The Crusades were fought because Jews and Christians tried to take Jerusalem away from the Muslims. It’s like someone coming to Australia (from another religion somewhere else) and trying to take over Australia. We really wouldn’t like it. We would protect our country and fight for our rights.

“Why is Jerusalem such an important city?”

Jerusalem was such an important city because it was the Holy Land. Muslims lived their. It was their Holy Land. The Holy land was so Important because it was based around so many religions. People wanted to call it their own. They would then fight for it so they could own the Holy Land and then people would come to them and visit the Holy Land.

“Why would people of Europe be so eager to fight in the Crusades (Adventure?)”

They wanted to fight the Muslims in Jerusalem because they thought that it was the most important place. Where the strongest religion was. It was the Holy Land, and they wanted to call it their Holy Land. The only way that they could have done that was to fight the Muslims in a crusade. The worst battle to fight for a country.

“Who had the rightful ‘claim’ to Jerusalem? (does anyone)?”

The people who have the rightful claim to Jerusalem were the Muslims. They lived there. If we were in Australia and some army or some other religion came to fight us for it, and if there was a person to judge on who got the country, you would think that they would choose Australia because it was our home land to start off with.

  10. The main motivation for all the religions was to take over Jerusalem and to fight for their religion. The main motivation for the knights was to practice their fighting skills and also for their religion. For the peasants, this was a chance to escape the feudal system and to be able to put some adventure into their lives. They also believed that if they died on the battle field they would go to heaven. To go on a crusade was a chance to do something different for an average peasant or knight.

Jerusalem is a very important place because it is very sacred and religious to lots of different religions. To the Christians, Jerusalem was the place where Jesus was born and they were motivated to fight because a pope told them that if they fought in the crusade then they would go to heaven no matter what they did while fighting for their religion. The Muslims had no real connection with Jerusalem so they only wanted to take control of the place. Jewish people had a very ancient connection with Jerusalem, they built an ancient temple there over three thousand years

The reason why the Europeans were so eager to fight in the crusade was because they didn’t want another religion taking over their sacred place. They also fought for it because they were told that they would go to heaven.

I think that all of the religions had a rightful claim to Jerusalem because they all thought that it is a holy land in different ways. No religion had a better reason than the other.

  11. The main motivation of all three religions was to fight over Jerusalem and make it their land. The people of Europe were so eager to fight in the Crusades because they wanted Islamic People to believe what they believed in and they wanted Jerusalem to themselves. The pope also told them that if they fought they would go straight to heaven. They crusades a weren’t always fought in the name of religion. They were also fought in the name of politics and social issues. Jerusalem was such an important city because it is where Jesus died and rose. It is also believed to behold land from god himself. Everyone wanted the claim to Jerusalem, but no one had the rightful claim to Jerusalem.

  12. No, the crusades weren’t always fought in the name of religion. They were also in the name of politics and social issues. Crusades were an organised campaign concerning a religious, political and social issue typically motivated by a desire for change.
Jerusalem is such an important city because it is where Jesus died and rose. It was also the capital of the holy land.
The people in Europe were so eager to fight in crusades because the pope told them if they fought they would go straight to heaven. They were also eager to fight because they wanted Islamic people to believe what they believed in and they wanted Jerusalem to themselves.
No one had the rightful claim to Jerusalem. Everyone wanted the claim, but no one actually owned Jerusalem.

  13. No, crusades were not always fought in the name of religion they were sometimes about politics. Jerusalem is such an important city to Christians because Jesus died and rose from the dead there. It is important to the Muslims because that is where Mohammad ascended. It is important to the Jews because that is their holy land the place that was given to them by God. The people in Europe were so eager to fight in the crusade because the Pope told them that if they fought then they would go straight to heaven and be forgiven for their sins. Personally I don’t think anyone had the ‘rightful’ claim to Jerusalem because it was the Jews home country but Muslims had a right as well because Mohammed ascended there and Jesus rose from the dead there so the Christians had a right as well…

  14. The crusades were a series of wars fought between three religions. The Christians, Muslims and Jews.

The Christians fought to claim Jerusalem from the Muslims because it was and still is a holy place for them. This is because it was where Jesus was crucified and ascended to heaven.

The Muslims fought to protect Jerusalem from the invading Christians, Jerusalem is also a holy place for Muslim people. This is because It was where Muhammed ascended to heaven.

The Jews also fought to protect Jerusalem form the Crusaders but were not ‘on the side’ of the Muslims. They simply did not want Jerusalem to become a Christian only place. It was a holy place for Jews because it was a
Site where there was a temple built by Solomon.

Jerusalem was an important city because there were so many religions considering it a holy place.

The Christians of Europe were eager to fight in Jerusalem because the pope told them that if they fought they would go to heaven when they died.

I believe that the Muslims and Jews had the rightful claim because they never tried to control it completely, they allowed others to come freely.

  15. At first, yes. The pope was disgraced that “their holy land” was taken over by Muslims. He decided that he could make people volunteer for an army to take back the land. Later on it was different. The crusaders fought more for personal gain rather then religious reasons.

It was an important place to different people. For the Muslims, it was where Muhammad ascended to heaven. For the Jews, it was where the ancient temple built by Solomon was. For the Christians, it was where Jesus was crucified and where he ascended to heaven. They all thought they had the right to the land.

What the crusaders’ would have wanted to fight for depended on who they were. For peasants it meant that they didn’t have to work. For knights it meant they had a worthy battle to attend to. For all, it meant an adventure and a ticket to heaven.

No one had the right to Jerusalem more then anyone else. They claimed to be pure and fighting at Gods command but really they were just selfish. They sadly knew not of sharing when they could have been living in peace.

  16. Holy – Wars
    Muslims of Jerusalem:
The First Crusade played a very important part in Medieval England. The First Crusade was an attempt to re-capture Jerusalem. The capture of Jerusalem was by the Muslims in 1076.Muslim soldiers made life very difficult for the Christians and trying to get to Jerusalem was filled with danger for a Christian.

    Christians from Europe:
Even though Moslems had ruled Jerusalem since 638, Christians were still allowed to visit the city. By the 11th century, however, the situation had changed. Pope Urban II (1088-1099, see art below) was responsible for assisting Emperor Alexus I (1081-1118) of Constantinople in launching the first crusade. He made one of the most influential speeches in the Middle Ages, calling on Christian princes in Europe to go on a crusade to rescue the Holy Land from the Turks.

    Jews of Jerusalem:
Jews fought side-by-side with Muslim soldiers to defend Jerusalem against the Crusaders. The Jews almost single-handedly defended Haifa against the crusaders, holding out in the besieged town for a whole month (June–July 1099) in fierce battles.

Were the Crusades only fought in the name of religion?:
The Crusades were religious conflicts in the High Middle Ages through to the end of the Late Middle Ages conducted by Catholic Europe against Muslims, pagans, heretics, and people under the ban of excommunication.

Why is Jerusalem such an important city?
Jerusalem has been the holiest city in Judaism and the ancestral and spiritual homeland of the Jewish people since the 10th century BCE. The city of Jerusalem is significant in a number of religious traditions, which is considered a holy city.

  17. No, crusades weren’t always fought in the name of religion. They fought in political and social issues to. The city of Jerusalem is significant in a number of religious traditions, including the Abrahamic religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which consider it a holy city. Some of the most sacred places for each of these religions are found in Jerusalem and the one shared between all three is the Temple Mount. The people of Europe where so eager to fight in the crusades because The Pope didn’t like that Muslims and Jews where in his holy land. So he got the Europeans to fight for him in the crusades by telling them if they did fight for him they would all go to heaven. I believe that the Jewish people had the rightful claim over Jerusalem because they had lived there the longest and they originally built the city in the first place, but I guess all the religions believed that they had the rightful claim over the holy land.

  18. Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is seen as holy ground to three major religions Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. It is thought of as holy by some religions as jesus was born there.I think though the fight was mostly about religion, common pride and ambition also played a part. This was from the popes and knights and nobles both. The people of Europe were eager to fight as they were told by the church that if they fought, they would go to heaven. I don’t think that land should be decided on religious claims. Though I would say the Jews above a right to it, as they were the first.

Sorry this is late. I still couldn’t download the book, so I had to find all the information online.

  19. The first few crusades that were fought in Jerusalem and its surrounding cities were used for religious purposes. The pope at the time told all of the English Christians that if they went and fought in a crusade and took Jerusalem for the Christians, they would go to Heaven when they die. After four or five of the crusades, the English were less excited about the crusades and they began being more for personal gain than religious fights.

Jerusalem was such an important city to all 3 parties that were fighting in the crusades. The Christians believed that it was where Jesus was crucified and went to heaven. The Muslims believed that it was where Muhammad rose up and went to heaven and the Jews built a sacred temple for them many year before, they believe that it belonged to them. All three parties strongly believed that the city of Jerusalem belonged to them, so much so that they were prepared to fight each other over the rights to the city.

The people in Europe were so eager to fight in the crusades because if what the pope said. At the time, what the church said was the truth, nobody knew any different. The current pope had told the Christians of the country that if they went and fought in the crusades against the other parties then they would rise into heaven and live for eternity when they died. Many people believed it and signed up immediately. For many it was a way to escape to their usual lives and experience battles in different countries.

All of the parties had partial claims to Jerusalem but none of them had the full right to the city. The city should not “belong” to anyone but they should have gotten along and all lived in the same area peacefully. At the point of time in the crusades, every major and wealthy country was intent on taking over as many parts of the world as they could to intimidate their enemies. That was why they wanted to take over the city, not just for religious rights but for the land, the land that they believed that they should have owned.

  20. The crusades where people who fort in the name of religion and only in the name of religion .

Because it is everyones holy place and a lot of religious people in Europe lived there.

The knights wanted to fight in the crusades because they get granted in to heaven when they die to fight for Christ to save Jerusalem to gain land to gain goods and for adventure to gain forgiveness for their sins Knights fought in the crusades because of their love for war also.

No body had a rightfull clam to Jerusalem .

  21. The crusades were a series of eight religious wars fought in the Middle Ages. Jerusalem was a holy city to the the Christians (where Jesus was crucified and ascended to heaven), to the Muslims (where Mohammed ascended to heaven) and to the Jews (“ancient temple built by Solomon). All these religious groups claimed that they had right to control Jerusalem.
In 600CE, arabs (muslims) took control of Jerusalem. The arabs allowed Christian and Jewish pilgrims to enter the city and even live in the city as long as they payed appropriate taxes. That all changed in about 1095 when a new group of arabs took control of Jerusalem not letting any Jewish or Christian pilgrims enter.
When this happened Emperor Alexius appealed to Pope Urban II to help him fight his Muslim enemies and set up a crusade to retake Jerusalem. In 1095 the pope called upon christians to rise up and take back Jeruselem. The pope said that if you fourght in Jerusalem (a holy cause) you would be freed of all sins and be let strait into heaven when you died. This was an especially good prospect for peasants who were poor and had no money to give to the church to be forgiven of their sins. For knights this was a good opportunity to use their fighting skills and for all this was an adventure and perhaps get rich. The crusade was a volunteer army made up of about 3,000 men.
The first crusade was in two expeditions. One, which was known as the Peasants Crusade, which was a violent rabble leaving a trail of destruction all the way to Constantinople. Because it was poorly organized, it was wiped out by the Turks.
The other expedition was lead by knights. It was much better organized and after having Jerusalem under siege for two months finally took it.
This was a short victory tough, there was only 50 years of piece until the Muslims rose up and re took Jerusalem, this caused the pope again to call on christians and take back Jerusalem. This crusade lasted from 1147-1149 and was not successful.
The third crusade lasted from 1189-1192 and was not successful.
The forth crusade lasted from 1202-1204. Instead of attacking Jerusalem they attacked and pillaged Constantinople.
There were several more crusades over the next few years. The crusades eventually stopped in 1453.
I do not think that the crusades were fought just for religious purposes. They may have been fought for religious purposes at the start but they eventually tuned into fights for land, with religion as an excuse.
I don’t think that anyone had a rightful claim to Jerusalem. They should have shared it and lived in peace… But this will never happen, we are human and will never be able to live in peace.
